The Making of Liquid Swords

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Saw this via NahRight Lite, Wax Poetics has a dope read on the making of the classic GZA album, Liquid Swords. GZA actually goes through and discusses each track and drops some really interesting facts about how the songs came to be.

“It was clear. It was fresh,” replied GZA, when asked how his head was while making Liquid Swords. “We were on a roll, and it was the perfect time to get in the studio and just do it.”

The year was ‘95 and the first generation of Wu-Tang solo projects was gripping fans globally. And for his part, GZA never did waste ink and has shown a penchant for writing since Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) and his debut, Words From The Genius. Even in a year of memorable releases, Liquid Swords’ rhymes coupled with RZA’s cinematic beats stood tall, furthering Wu-Tang’s dominance to this day.

Thirteen years later, Liquid Swords continues to age well and is a stellar case of quality ’90s hip-hop. Here for the first time ever, GZA talks about the making of the heralded classic, breaking down the album track-by-track and allowing insight into vital era in which it was made.

The Making Of “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx”

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

You ever have those days where you fall in love with an album again? That happened to me last night. In the midst of new Raekwon tracks dropping and Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2 getting a release date (Apr 7, but I’m sure it’ll change by then), I was in the mood to bump Rae and Ghost all day. So after puffin a L last night, I had Cuban Linx in rotation for the first time in a while (blasphemous, I know). From the moment Rae speaks on the first track skit and RZA’s haunting production drops you know you’re in for something special. RZA has said numerous times that he compares his music to movies, and I’d have to say OB4CL is his prime example. The combination of Rae and Ghost’s hard hitting but smooth flowing lyrics over RZA’s beats puts you in a zone like none other. Plus, the fact that they were still hungry at this point in their career, and this was their chance to prove to the world that they were built for hip-hop automatically raises the bar. I was only passively listening while perusing the internet, but the moment the beat dropped on Heaven & Hell I had to stop what I was doing, start the track over, and just bask in the glory that is OB4CL…and I was in love all over again.

Bong Bong! Wildstyle Mag interviews RZA

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

Long read, but worth every second. RZA breaks down the beef between Wu members, finances (diversify yo bonds nigga), the music industry, and just drops knowledge. Wildstyle is a German mag, so here is the full interview translated on FWMJ’s blog. Choice quotes:

…I told Ghost right in court to come over to me. Ghost is my brother, Ghost has got babies from my sister, did you know that? I’m the uncle of his children, my little sister has two babies from him. I was like “Yo Sun, we’re in court, look how stupid this is. They got us in court not talking to each other”. His lawyer tells him not to talk to me. Why? Because they don’t want the truth to come out. The lawyer costs Ghost 1000 dollars a day, he costs me 1000 dollars a day and this case has been going on for 2-3 years!

Wildstylemag.com: Does that make you sad?

RZA: It makes me supersad!…

Like I have a blood-brother named King who used to rob me, beat me up, take my clothes, stab me with forks and shit. He was just the older brother, who got jealous when your mother gives you more love. He was just mad, he was a mad kid, yo! He used to steal my money everyday. And when I got wealthy I bought this big 100 acres of land in Ohio. And I told him to go there and run the land. He went there for 3 years and ran the land. When he got to run the land by himself the solitary and the solitude made him become a real man. And now he’s my best motherfucking friend. Life is like that sometimes.

RZA: What’s happening right now in the Hip Hop industry is that it is deeply affected by the general economy of the country. The people who are getting the money now are young. When you are young “money” is not the same. I give you an example: If you are 19 years old and you get a record contract with 15.000 dollars, you’re a cool 19 year old motherfucker. So it doesn’t bother you, you know?! You don’t even realize it. But for the artists that are 25 and up 15.000 dollars is not a great salary, it’s a medium salaray. So that’s where the problem comes out. If you see somebody like Souljah Boy, who is only 16 years old, making fucking 200 Grand a year, then he’s doing great. And all he is buying is sneakers and candy. But if you are dealing with a rapper that is 25 years old that may have his first child on the way, or maybe his first home he has to buy, there’s the problem.

Let me use the example as a woman of an analogy. Me and my ex-wife wouldn’t get along, you know. So she would go somewhere and I would think to myself “Where the fuck is this bitch at, what is she doing? Who is she with?” I could think of a thousand things she’s doing. But she only did one thing: She went to the fucking grocery store. That’s life yo.

The Onion x Wu-Tang Clan

Monday, December 15th, 2008

According to Wilburn, it took trained scholars hundreds of hours to parse out Wu-Tang’s complex lineage, with experts in nearly every discipline studying the group’s dope oral traditions, as well as its customary and often fresh style of dress.

“It was an immense project,” said Tinsley, who coauthored the 450-page genealogical report. “For instance, it took us months to conclude that Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Dirt McGirt, Big Baby Jesus, Osirus, Dirt Dog, and Peanut the Kidnapper were all the same person.”

lmao. The Onion never fails to entertain me.
