The Daily Hit: Joell Ortiz - Top Of The Charts

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

Note: OB4CL2 is in stores today, and I highly recommend coppin! Also, to anyone in the Boston area, Mos Def + Talib Kweli + Jay Electronica + Medina Green @ House of Blues tonight.

I don’t know why the only version of this I can find is measly 64kbps, but the track is so dope I don’t care…this coming from a dude that barely fucks with 128kbps (VBR or 192+ all day!). Joell doing what he does over nice production by The Faculty. So many clever one-liners, it’s ridiculous…

“You’re nothin, you’re frontin, you’re stuffin on Thanksgiving // My tummy is hungry, I’ll put you on a plate listen // I’m makin it hard like a blowjob with great rhythm // (Ayo Joell, calm down!) Nah, I aint even tryna play with em! // I’m fiendin, this money they handin out will change living // The project is ugly, I daily barley escape prison // I’m beginnin to feel pinned down like a rape victim // Wishin for a deal, tryna deal with the fact I hate wishin…”

The Daily Hit: J The S - Do You (feat. Joell Ortiz & Lee Wilson)

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

I hate to admit that I didn’t familiarize myself with J The S (formerly Jake The Snake) until I saw him at the Boston Hip-Hop Unity Fest last year, but after a few weak opening acts this dude was a breath of fresh air when he got on stage. He ripped his set apart…I hadn’t heard any of the songs he was performing prior to that night but I was headnoddin like someone just threw on the “Made You Look” instrumental or some shit. Especially when he preformed this track (minus Joell) which is off of his (then new) album When In Rome…(solid album). They both came correct, but Ortiz just shines on this if for nothin more than the few opening bars to his verse:

“Woah! Here we go again them chills runnin up my spine // can’t fight it, that rhythm do somethin to my mind // then I think, then the signals shoot down my arm and make me grab that ink // and then me and the track in sync”

The Daily Hit: Joell Ortiz - 125 Pt. 5 (Man I’m…)

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

“Who’s a problem? I’m a problem, yall aint solvin shit // I’m a problem like when the tre pound revolver spit // I’m a problem like a child mother and fatherless // Running away from group homes, not gettin far for shit // I’m a problem like an artist improperly marketed // In they first week got em saying “but I worked hard for this” // I’m a problem like approaching this music shit half-assed // I’m a problem like a calculus question in math class // I’m a problem like being drunk, tryna run from the D’s // All out of breath so you decide to hide up under a V // I’m a problem like that dreaded phone call from baby mama // That always starts smooth, but ends in that crazy drama”

Yeah, that’s a long ass quote, but damn Joell goes in on these 125 joints.
